Shawnee Ruling Comes Down
The
District Court of Shawnee County has let
their ruling be known on the case
involving Senate Bill 66. They say that
the bill is constitutionally sound, and
many are not happy about their ruling.
The new Attorney General Stephen Six
plans to appeal the case, and says that
“the case is not over.”
Shawnee County District Court Judge
Charles Andrews sent down the ruling,
and the case will now be appealed to the
Kansas Supreme Court. Six says that is
important that they move on the appeal
in a timely manner as “the business
interests and economic development” of
the state depend on it
Attorney David Cooper, for the Sumner
County Commissioners said that he was
happy that the decision had come down in
their favor. Responsible for handling
the issues as they relate to the slot
machine casino, Cooper said that he was
pleased with the decision and that it
had been handled in a timely manner. He
filed a brief to keep Sumner County part
of Senate Bill 66, defeating Stand Up
for Kansas in the process.
Andrews ruled that there wasn’t any
evidence to suggest that Sumner County
residents would have wanted a private
owned slot machine casino as opposed to
a state owned one. He says that with the
vote so undeniably in the favor of
having a slot machine casino that
residents had spoken as to what they
wanted.
