Machine and Lottery Proceeds Were a Lie
Residents
of New York State are angry at their
state government and their governor and
for good reason. They say that time and
time again they have been lied to by
their government and by Governor Spitzer
– and before him Governor George Pataki
– and they aren’t taking it any more.
They say that the time has come for
residents to take a stand against their
government and show them that they
cannot continue to lie to them.
They say that it began in 1966 with the
creation of the lottery. Their lawmakers
told them that the proceeds would go
toward education. Then in 2001 when they
wanted slot machines at the horse racing
tracks, they again said that the
proceeds would go to education. Now,
residents claim, they have broken their
promise and are not using that money for
that.
They say that their lawmakers met in
secret and decided to take the money
that was to go to education and are
putting it back into the gambling
industry. Their lawmakers have chosen to
take tens of millions of dollars from
the schools and will use that money to
support the horse racing industry
instead.
The amount of money that the tracks will
now be getting will mean that they are
getting more money than the education
system is. The tracks were supposed to
be getting 25% with the state keeping
75%. Now the tracks are getting up to
56% instead. Plus the money from the
slot machines at Aqueduct, an estimated
$139 million, all of which was supposed
to go to schools, will now be going to
the tracks as well.
