Sugar
Creek Casino Approved
The
Missouri Gaming Commission has
unanimously voted to allow a new slot
machine casino in Sugar Creek. This was
a surprise to some as they feel that the
market is already oversaturated with
slot machines, and to bring in more
would be ridiculous. However, the
commission obviously disagrees.
Coming back with a 5-0 vote, the
commission angered the state’s casino
industry as they say that the Kansas
City area cannot handle any more
competition from new casinos, as they
barely have enough to handle what they
have now. They say that the new casino
would hurt the other existing slot
machine casinos, and that another is not
warranted for the area.
William A. Brasher, an Attorney for the
Missouri Gaming Association, said that
“it is patently inequitable and unfair
to place existing licensees at risk,” by
adding the new casino. Brasher says that
the existing casinos have already put
“hundreds of millions of dollars” into
their establishments and the addition of
a new casino would make it impossible
for them to recoup the money that they
have spent.
The commission said that they felt that
the concerns of the association were
unfounded and unwarranted as they simply
did not want to see more competition
come to the area. They feel that the
additional competition will do just fine
in that area. Brasher pointed out that
the last time they had five casinos that
one had to close down.
