Machine Bill Not the Answer
It seems
that the Missouri state government is
considering bringing in slot machines to
make more money for charities. Up until
now, bingo has been the game of choice
for many of the fraternal and veterans
organizations out there but they have
found that recently there has not been
as much interest in playing, therefore
causing them to make significantly less
money.
The idea of trying to come up with ideas
for them to make money is not a bad one,
but many argue that slot machines are
not the solution. Democratic Rep. Ray
Salva of Sugar Creek says that House Bil
566 to legalize the slot machines is a
bad idea on every level. He says that
slot machines don’t bring in enough
money for them to be worth the price
that the state would have to pay.
He argues that bingo machines are not
bringing in significant money not
because they are bingo and not slot
machines, but because of the economy. He
says that the idea of bringing in slot
machines to bring in more money is just
a bad idea – and that all it would
attract would be compulsive gamblers. He
says that the slot machines would end up
costing the state $1.3 million a year.
Not only that but they would be
unregulated, which means anyone could
play – including children. Slot machines
are not meant for the purpose that they
are seeking, rather more suited to a
place that can keep a close eye on who
is playing and how often.
