Machine Casino Could be Coming
There is
a large group of people that have been
fighting to get expanded slot machine
gambling within the state of
Massachusetts. The fight has been going
on for years, and shows no signs of
stopping. However, it does show signs of
coming to a reasonable end – although
that would depend on what side of the
coin you are on.
If you are against the slot machines
then that is not good news, but if you
are one of the ones who has been
fighting for them all this time, it most
assuredly is. By bringing in Robert
DeLeo and him being elected as House
Speaker, it brings the slot machine
discussion out to the forefront again.
DeLeo took over for former speaker
Salvatore DiMasi who suddenly resigned
his position. DiMasi has always been
very focal and very firm on the fact
that he did not want slot machines
legalized in the state. He thought that
they were a blight on the citizens of
the state and that no good would ever
come of them. He has fought Governor
Deval Patrick for a long time against
them and was instrumental in killing his
proposal.
Patrick wanted to bring in three resort
style slot machine casinos, but DiMasi
was vehement that it would never be
passed. DeLeo has voted with DiMasi in
the past, but has not been as clear cut
on what he would allow and what he
wouldn’t in as far as slot machines.
DeLeo voted to allow slot machines in
2006 which would give the tracks each up
to 2,00 of the machines.
