Debate
Rages on in New Hampshire
Both slot
machine proponents and opponents are
letting their voices be heard in
reference to whether or not slot
machines are the solution to the state’s
money problems. Many feel that if they
legalize slot machines across the state
that the budget problems will be solved
and that no one would be hurt. However,
slot machine opponents say that this is
not the way to solve the problem and
that the problems that come from
allowing gambling in the state will go
on long after the budget has been paid
for.
Senator Lou D’Allesandro has a proposal
that would put a maximum of seven slot
machine parlors across the state. Many
had thought that his proposal would be
something similar to it, but this is the
first time he has confirmed it. He says
that the slot machine proposal is simply
an economic stimulus package for the
state, and that “significant revenue”
would be created for the state as well
as numerous jobs.
However, House Deputy Republican Leader
David Hess is opposed to the slot
machines. Hess says that the money that
would come in from the slot machines is
just not worth it. He says that no
matter what you call them, slot machine
parlors are just casinos and they will
bring in more crime and gambling
addiction than they can handle as a
state.
Hess says that they are all under the
impression that slot machines are just
for fun and games, but that there are
serious consequences for allowing this
kind of gambling expansion across their
state. He says voters will regret it if
they allow it.
