Lovett
Them Horses
You have
to love horses, and you have to love
Lyle Lovett. Don’t see the connection?
Well, you aren’t alone. There are many
that were just as surprised to find a
connection between slot machines and
horses and yes, Lyle Lovett last week,
even though Lovett himself does not see
the confusion.
There are many horse racers and
supporters that would love to see slot
machines legalized in Texas. They
believe that adding slot machines into
the equation will allow for large sums
of money to come into their state
government, and they really aren’t far
off. It is currently estimated that
millions of dollars go over their
borders to neighboring states every year
as residents cross state lines to play
slot machines elsewhere.
Lovett is simply trying to bring
attention to the fact that the horse
racing industry is dying in the great
state of Texas as they are just not as
competitive as those tracks that offer
slot machines across state borders. He
is trying to get Texans to stand behind
him and work with him in legalizing slot
machines, which he says would bring in
$5.2 billion to the state.
Not only would it bring in income to
save the industry, but slot machines
would also bring in about 96,000 much
needed jobs to the state as well. Lovett
says that with them losing so much of
their business to other states that can
afford higher prizes and stakes because
of the revenue they are getting from the
slot machines, that Texas can no longer
afford to sit by and do nothing.
