Details on Rendell’s Plan
Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell wants
to bring in slot machines to make more
money for the state. He says that he
wants to see video poker slot machines
brought into bars, clubs, restaurants,
etc. because he needs a way of
offsetting the price of college for
students in the state. Rising education
costs have made it difficult for many
high school seniors to attend college,
and if they do they are looking at large
student loan bills when they get out.
The state already allows regular slot
machine gambling, but Rendell thinks
that they can go one step further.
Rendell says that by adding in the
additional video poker slot machines
that they will be able to help more than
175,000 college students pay for their
tuition. It would give the state another
$550 million each year.
If it passes, those students that live
in households that make less than
$100,000 a year, and choose to go to any
one of the fourteen state universities
or community colleges would be eligible
for up to $7,600 from the slot machines.
The money could be used for tuition,
books, fees, room and board.
With so many other states bringing in
the video poker slot machines, it is no
wonder that PA would consider it as
well. However, many say that since they
just added slot machines that it might
be a better idea to hold off and see how
they do before they expand any more.
Rendell says that they are not related
as the ones already approved are your
basic slot machines, and these are video
poker slot machines, and therefore will
appeal to a different crowd.
