Texas
Looking at Slot Machines
For the
past few years there has been a real
push to get slot machines legalized in
Texas. Those that love to play the slot
machines say that they have sat idly by
for years while tons of money, millions
of dollars, has gone out of the state by
the bus load. Other surrounding states
are able to offer slot machines at their
tracks, and then they send busses over
the state line to pick up gamblers for
them.
The tracks say that they cannot survive
the competition that they are having
with the other states. They cannot offer
as high of purses as they can, nor can
they pay their breeders or trainers as
much as they could if the slot machines
were at their tracks as well. Now it
seems that the legislature might agree
with them.
There was new legislation introduced on
Tuesday that would allow nine showcase
casinos to bring in slot machines in the
major cities around the state. This
would bring millions of dollars to the
state and keep it from going across the
border.
However, anti slot machine groups could
not have been less happy with the news.
Representatives heard from the Baptists
who said that bringing in slot machines
was a huge problem for the state and
that it would add to the slot machine
addiction that they currently face over
the border. Horse trainers and tracks
were also not thrilled with the idea
that they could soon be seeing slot
machines coming in at casinos, for they
want them at their tracks. They say that
this would only give them more
competition.
