Etowah
County
Holding Slot Machines
Alabama
seems to be getting hit from all sides
with this electronic bingo vs. slot
machines debate. The governor has
maintained that bingo is legal in the
state as long as it is not electronic.
He says that the electronic games are
the same as slot machines and that they
are illegal in the state. He went to the
Supreme Court with his charges and they
backed him stating that they are too
similar to slot machines and are
therefore illegal. They created a task
force to eliminate all of the illegal
slot machines in the state, and so far
are doing a really good job making sure
that they all get removed.
But
the state is not finished making up its
mind when it comes to the slot machines.
Right now Etowah County Sheriff’s
Department is holding two machines which
will be used in a court case to
determine if they are illegal slot
machines or harmless electronic bingo
games. The Circuit County Court Judge
Allen Millican is going to have them
unpacked and tested to see if they are
slot machines or not.
The
media has been allowed to examine the
slot machines as long as they did not
test them. It is hard to tell what they
look like as they are covered by black
plastic with evidence tape wrapped
around them. They are roughly seven feet
tall and are roughly 25 inches wide.
There is also a computer server and
cables that will be used to run the slot
machine. The judge is going to have the
machines set up before he comes in so
that they can be tested without having
to wait for the set up, although it is
not clear when set up will take place.
The
slot machines were manufactured by AGS
LLC Bingo Systems, and they maintain
that they are nothing more than bingo
machines. They maintain that they meet
the county and the state’s standards for
bingo games.
