Maryland
Still Trying for Slot Machines in
Anne
Arundel
County
The
problem is that residents never wanted
slot machines to be located so close to
their mall. They have fought it time and
time again and the state of Maryland still keeps trying to bring them in.
They told their state, their city
commissioners, etc. that they did not
want the slot machines to be located
there and that they wanted them located
somewhere else. They say that the area
that the state wants to put the slot
machines is right by their mall and that
this location was already overrun with
traffic.
They
also said that they felt that it would
bring down their property values of
their homes to have a slot machine
casino there. They argued that in this
economy that their housing prices have
already gone down tremendously and they
don’t want to see it happen again. So
their zoning commission just approved
the slot machines, but residents say
that they are not backing down.
Instead they are circulating a petition
to step the slot machines from coming
in. They say that they have already
gathered roughly 23,700 signatures, and
they want to be able to get their issue
on the November referendum and have
people vote against the slot machines in
that location. The Board of Elections is
at this time verifying the signatures.
They
say that they understand that the state
needs the revenue that would come from
the slot machines, but that they need to
find another location. Unfortunately,
this is not the only location that the
state is having issues with – so who
knows when Maryland will be able to
get their slot machines up and running?
