Democrats Ready for Slot Machines
With
the new legislature coming in, Democrats
have taken hold of the Maryland
political scene. They have a much larger
majority than they had before, and like
most of the country, they are looking
for changes in a big way. One of those
changes is slot machines. However, the
legalization of the slot machines is
going to come down to the governor and
two men the Senate President and House
Speaker both of whom have very
different points of view on slot
machines and gambling in general.
Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller
is all for the legalization of slot
machines. He says that raising taxes is
not an option and that the government
has a responsibility for taking care of
their people. He says that they need to
spend less and earn more, and that they
need to legalize slot machines to help
with their revenue.
House Speaker Michael Busch could not be
further from him he thinks
legalization of the slot machines could
be much more harm than help in the
state. However, Busch says that there
are several more things that he would
like to see funded, such as health care
for everyone in the state.
Experts say that they cant all get
their way. If they want health care for
every person in the state, they have to
come up with additional revenue. Raising
taxes will probably not make them any
friends, and slot machines seem to fit
the bill. The legalization of the slot
machines could mean billions in revenue
for the state and many think that
Busch needs to just allow it to happen.
