Four Winds’ Slot Machines Boon for
Schools
The
New Buffalo Schools and New Buffalo
Township cannot wait for the Four Winds
Casino and Resort starts running their
slot machines. A nice chunk of the
income from the slot machines will be
going to the schools and the township,
and they figure the sooner the better.
The casino plans on having its slot
machines up and running by August, and
the school is counting the days.
The slot machines at the casino will get
divvied up between the state and local
government – with Berrien Country
receiving the third largest amount, and
the city of New Buffalo receiving the
fourth largest amount of slot machine
revenue. The compact that was signed
with the state of Michigan by the
Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians said
that the casino will pay the state 8%
and local governments 2% of their slot
machine net wins.
The slot machine revenue is then divided
up between the schools, the libraries,
governments, and reimbursements. The
schools will receive the largest part of
the slot machine revenue, getting almost
a million a year by 2008. New Buffalo’s
Intermediate School District would
receive $115,848. They are assuming that
the casino’s slot machines will bring in
almost 15,000 customers a day – well
worth the $330 million price tag it cost
to build the casino.
