Governor Patrick Seriously Considering
Slot Machines
Governor Duval Patrick has the anti-slot
machine groups in a tizzy today, after
saying that the state needs to
“seriously consider” legalizing slot
machines in order to balance the budget.
He says he has met and been surrounded
by those who are opposed to slot
machines almost all of his life.
However, now he is looking to talk to
some proponents of slot machines to get
a different perspective on the matter.
There are those who can’t wait to see
the slot machines legalized in
Massachusetts – who have long seen the
need and the desire for gambling in the
state. They want to see either casinos
or even just slot machines legalized,
and they want to see the state start
taking advantage of the money that can
be coming to them with that
legalization. With the budget getting
worse and worse by the day, they think
that legalization of slot machines is a
no brainer.
However, those who are against the
legalization of slot machines say that
the only reason people are interested
right now in them is because they need
the money. They say that the interest
for slot machines isn’t so great when
the government is doing well
financially. They say that interest in
the slot machines will wane, and then
there won’t be as much revenue coming in
– and if the government has banked on
that revenue they will need to find it
from somewhere else. Therefore, just
find that stable source of income before
legalizing the slot machines, and then
everyone is happy.
