It Wouldn’t Be Mardi Gras without Slot
Machines
Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino is
about to end its reign as the sole slot
machine operator in Broward County.
After months of anticipation, slot
machines are now available in Hallandale
Beach at the Mardi Gras Racetrack and
Gaming Center.
Class III slot machines, also known as
Vegas type slot machines; have been
legalized in the state of Florida, but
in Broward County only. Miami-Dade
County also voted on the slot machines
but they chose not to legalize them – a
decision they are now regretting. They
are planning on bringing the slot
machine legalization bill back to a vote
next November, now that they have seen
how well things are working out for
Broward.
Since the slot machines were legalized
in March 2005, many have anticipated the
opening of the casinos. The Mardi Gras
slot machines are part of a bigger
picture than just the track and the
casino. There will also be retail space,
a hotel, restaurants, etc. to make it an
entertainment complex.
They have installed almost 1,200 slot
machines according to Dan Adkins of the
casino. However, there will be no ATM
machines in the casino as per state law.
There will however, be a shuttle that
will take slot machine players to the
nearest ATM.
