Slot Machines May Help Mass.
Slot machines could be the answer to the
problems that Massachusetts is facing
with their budget. By legalizing slot
machines and bringing in casinos, the
state could bring in more than the $1
billion needed to balance the budget.
Many legislators are already filing slot
machine bills as they think Governor
Patrick is more willing to legalize them
than previous governors were.
The legislature is currently looking at
several bills that would legalize the
slot machines and bring in casinos. One
bill would bring in slot machine casinos
to the southeastern and western parts of
the state. The Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe
on Martha’s Vineyard could bring in a
casino as well if slot machines are
legalized. They would have the right
under governmental law to do so if slot
machines are legalized, as would the
Mashpee Wampanoag tribe on Cape Cod if
they become federally recognized.
Some of the state’s municipal leaders
said that the idea of legalizing slot
machines was not a bad one, but it would
depend on where they went. Some thought
that it should be up to the individual
towns to make the decision as to whether
or not a slot machine casino could come
in or not, and that they didn’t want
someone coming in and telling them that
they had to have one. They say that the
jobs created by a slot machine casino
could be good, but there will also be
problems that come with it that they
would need to address.
