Miami-Dade Trying for Slot Machines
Again
Because of the fact that slot machines
have done so well in Broward County,
Miami-Dade pari-mutuels think they might
have a better chance at getting them
legalized now. They are planning on
asking voters again if they will
legalize the slot machines at their
racetracks. There are three locations
they would like to see the slot machines
legalized at, and they are hoping that
residents are now seeing what they are
missing out on in Broward.
Miami Jai-Alai and the other three
pari-mutuel sites have done a survey to
see if there is more of an interest in
legalizing slot machines then there was
last time, and it seems that residents
are ready to make that jump. Two years
after voting against legalizing slot
machines in the county, residents want
what Broward County seems to have.
Last time they had two powerful anti
slot machine opponents in Governor Bush
and the Mayor. They actively tried to
prevent the legalization of the slot
machines, and were successful. This time
around, Bush is gone and the Mayor is
taking a “wait and see” attitude, which
makes it seem as though it might be
easier to pass a slot machine bill.
Seeing the millions that have already
been generated by the slot machines in
Broward doesn’t hurt their case either;
and neither does the fact that there
will be 4,000 new jobs and $800 million
in construction work. Miami-Dade’s plan
would have the slot machines give the
county 1.5% of the first $250 million,
and 2% above that. A portion would go to
help state education as well. They
expect to have it on the November
ballot.
