More Signatures Needed for Slot Machine
Ban
They
may not have gotten enough signatures
this time around to get the slot machine
referendum on the ballot, but they are
not done trying. The group No Slots for
ME! said that they are aware that they
fell short of the amount needed for
November’s ballot, but they are going to
try for next year instead. They say slot
machines should not be legalized, and
they want it changed.
The activist group was just short of the
number of signatures they needed to make
the slot machine referendum official.
They needed a little over 55,000, but
the group did not say exactly how short
they were. They are trying to stop any
new slot machines from coming into the
state, and close down the slot machines
at Hollywood Slots in Bangor.
The Secretary of State said that the
Passamaquoddy Tribe did succeed in their
petition to get slot machines in
Washington County. There are also others
who would like to see slot machines come
into Oxford County, and are hoping to
get their referendum for a casino in the
2008 election.
Not that slot machines are the only
thing on residents’ minds – Don Christen
is trying to get marijuana legalized as
well. However, he does not know if he as
enough signatures to get it on the
ballot this November.
