Not
Every State Wants Slot Machines
Even
though more than 20 states expect
deficits for 2008, still some will not
bring in slot machines. They think that
the amount of money that they could
possibly make is not worth bringing in
the slot machines and the social ills
that would follow them. They would
rather see their taxes raised than bring
in slot machines.
Last November, Ohioans and Nebraskans
voted “NO” on expanding slot machines
and gambling – Rhode Islanders voted
“NO” on a $1 billion slot machine casino
that would come into West Warwick.
Many say that they continue to vote
against the slot machines and gambling
because they are afraid of what will
come with them, and they are afraid that
their government will use it as an
excuse to spend more money.
There are concerns about health care, or
education, or highways in need of repair
– but there are also concerns that the
slot machines will bring in addiction,
suicide, despair, crime, etc. – the list
goes on. Many feel that the more money
you bring in from the slot machines to
fix your problems just gives you new
ones.
