Rain Soaked Slot Machines

Enchanted Eve in downtown Vinton ended up being more of a rain soaked eve as the rain came down in a steady drizzle all night long. It wasn’t cold, just wet, which has a tendency to put a damper on the slot machines and casino festivities.

Usually the festivities go to the wee hours of the morning, but with the rain many revelers called it a night earlier on. Police patrolled the slot machines and other gambling equipment but with such a slow turnout there wasn’t much to patrol. The alcohol free party that Roanoke County throws each year is a chance for people to hand out together without drinking, and it lets them play their hands at the slot machines and challenge lady luck.

The town holds the event in a different location each year, but this year they loaded the slot machines and other gambling paraphernalia into the Cundiff Drug Store. There were many residents sitting at the slot machines or any one of the table games trying their luck – trying to bring in a little extra cash with the new year.

The group did not see as many residents out this year because of the rain, but there were some willing to play the slot machines. Others came for the dancing, still others for the food. Whatever they came for, they left happy and with a sense of community.
