Spokane Tribe’s Tentative Slot Machine
Deal
The
Spokane Tribe of Indians has battled the
government for years over slot machines
and casinos. The tribe has never been
able to reach an agreement over a slot
machine compact, and thus have operated
without one. At one point the state
tried to get an injunction against them
operating the slot machine casino but
the feds agreed with the tribe and said
that the state was not negotiating in
good faith and allowed the tribe to
continue running their slot machine
casinos.
That has finally changed however, and
the deal that they are working on could
change the face of slot machines and
gambling in Washington forever. The idea
is that they gave the tribe more freedom
and benefits than they gave the other
tribes in the state, but that may come
to backfire on them as the other tribes
try to reach the same deals with their
slot machine casinos.
With the new slot machine compact, which
has not been completely finalized, the
tribe will have more freedom to do as
they please than the other tribes as
well. There are bound to be hard
feelings over the compact, and many
think that the other tribes are going to
ask for renegotiations of their slot
machine compacts as well. They think
that they are opening a can of worms
that they really don’t want to deal
with.
The Spokane’s probably don’t care, as it
looks like they are basically getting
everything they want and more in the new
slot machine deal. They are going to be
able to offer higher stakes, cash or
cashless slot machines, etc. The last
one is important because the slot
machines are currently banned in
Washington.
