Vice Mayor Allowed Illegal Slot Machines
Morrow Vice President York Bryant was
found guilty of operating an illegal
slot machine at his place of business on
Friday. Supposedly he told a waitress to
pay some men who were playing the slot
machines, and they turned out to be
state agents. This is the second time
Bryant has gotten in trouble for
operating slot machines at his
restaurant.
Bryant now faces up to a year in prison
for the illegal slot machines, and is no
longer eligible to serve on the Village
Council. It is considered a felony
because of the slot machine conviction
in 1989. Sheriff’s deputies took the
slot machines and $320 after the
waitress paid the state agents. There
were two separate dates – November 3rd
and 10th, but Bryant was only found
guilty of the 10th.
Bryant said that authorities told him
the slot machines were legal because no
one got money after playing, and he
contends he did not tell the waitress to
pay anyone. His attorney says he thinks
it is simply a case of someone else not
wanting Bryant to serve on the council
anymore, and they knew he was up for
re-election. He says that there was no
recording of her paying the agent, nor did they
profit from it because they were never
paid more money than what they put into
the slot machines.
