Wonderland Still Trying to Get Slot
Machines
Wonderland has been trying to get slot
machines into the racetrack for a long
time, and now they have just recently
tried to get them again. Local
legislators are helping them in their
bid for slot machines, as they feel that
Wonderland’s gain is a benefit for the
whole school. They are hoping that a new
government might increase their chances
of getting slot machines legalized.
Governor Deval Patrick is not a hue fan
of the slot machines, but he has agreed
to keep it under consideration and look
at the issue objectively. The president
of Wonderland said that if they were to
legalize the slot machines, the state
could be looking at $500 million in
revenue. They are looking to legalize
the slot machines at not only
Wonderland, but also at Suffolk Downs
and other tracks in Massachusetts.
Many think that the only way that they
can compete with neighboring states is
to bring in the slot machines. It will
increase the tracks’ revenue, and also
the purses they will be able to offer.
However, many others think that racing
is dying anyway, and they should just
let it go. Last year a bill to bring in
2,000 slot machines at four tracks was
voted down.
Supporters disagree – they say that not
only do you save the tracks by
legalizing slot machines, but you also
save all of those jobs. Plus, the state
gets additional revenue from their cut
of the slot machines, which would give
them millions to put toward all of their
communities.
