Russell Crowe Takes Giant Step for
Sydney
Many in
Sydney have been outspoken in regards to
their dislike of slot machines in their
city. In fact, there are so many slot
machines or pokies as they call them, in
Australia that many are calling for a
complete ban on the machines as they say
that they prey on their citizens.
The government has long been under fire
to remove the slot machines as residents
say that they are bad for their people,
and that those that play them are those
that can least afford to. With about A$4
million coming from the slot machines
every year, it is no wonder that they
might not want to get rid of them. They
keep talking about doing some sort of
limitation on them, but many people in
Australia would like to see the slot
machines gone all together.
Keeping that in mind, Russell Crowe and
his partner in the South Sydney
Rabbitohs club, Peter Holmes à Court,
have decided to remove all of the slot
machines in their club. They say that
they are going to make the game more
family friendly, and that removing the
slot machines is a good way to do that.
They already removed the cheerleaders
from the team as many of the women said
that they made them uncomfortable at the
games, so this is simply one more step
that Crowe and Holmes have taken to
protect the integrity of the club.
They say that the slot machines are a
social evil and that there is no place
for them in their club. They convinced
their board that it was in the best
interests of the club as well as the
city to remove these slot machines, even
though they bring in A$1 million
(£430,000) every year. They had 160 slot
machines in the club.
They decided that the slot machines were
having an adverse effect on the
community and that they should be
supporting the people who support them.
They say that they will find other ways
of bringing in money to the club,
instead of taking it from the people who
currently come – most of whom rely on
social security.
