Slot Machines for Guam
In what
came as no surprise to anyone except
maybe Guam Greyhound track, Prop A was
defeated at the polls and slot machines
will remain illegal at the track. With
more than 60% voting to oppose slot
machines, one will wonder if the track
will take the hint this time or keep
pushing for more slot machines.
The special election to fill the
legislative vacancy caused by the death
of Antonio Unpingco seemed the perfect
forum for Guam Greyhound to try and get
their slot machines approved. The
opposition felt that it was neither the
time nor place for such a vote, and
argued that with the short time span of
notification they couldn’t properly
fight the issue on the ballot.
Never fear, they obviously didn’t need
to. The Guam voters were more than clear
in that they do not want slot machines
now or ever. They also voted in Democrat
Benjamin Cruz into the vacancy left by
Unpingco, who said that he would “honor
his memory” in all that he did while in
office.
The special election actually saw very
low voter turnout, with some precincts
showing less than half of their voters
participating. By the end of the day,
only slightly more than 44% of the
island’s voters chose to vote on the
slot machine proposal which could be why
the opposition won by such a large
margin.
Before the votes were counted, Cruz said
that he was disappointed in the lack of
interest in whether or not slot machines
were legalized, he said he would have
hoped that people were more concerned
with what was going on in reference to
the slots. Cruz was opposed to the slot
machines, and was glad that the proposal
didn’t pass.
