Machine Bidding is Coming
With only
one week left it looks like there may be
four slot machine companies interested
in bidding on the licenses. Ever since
Marylanders voted to legalize slot
machines in the state, there has been
much speculation as to who would get the
much discussed licenses. There have been
a lot of names tossed around as to who
might be trying, but until they are
revealed on February 2nd, it really is a
guessing game.
The slot machine proposals will be
released as of that date, and even n the
State House they are only guessing at
who they think it might be. There are
five slot machine licenses available,
but only one is really cause for debate
as it is considered to be the most
lucrative of the group. It is the one in
Anne Arundel County, which must be
within two miles of the
Baltimore-Washington Parkway.
It will have the most slot machines at
4,750 slots, and with that number of
slot machines and the location, it is
bound to turn a large profit. So far
those vying are Laurel Park, Halsey
Minor, Hard Rock International, and the
Cordish Companies. Laurel Park is owned
by Canadians and is the county
racetrack, Halsey Minor comes from a
Virginia born buyer who wants a
standalone casino, Hard Rock – the well
known entertainment and casino group,
and Cordish is the big name behind all
of the big developments in downtown
Baltimore.
All of those trying for the slot
machines know that there is a lot of
money to be made from them, and that
they will get 33% of the revenue. This
of course means millions of dollars to
whoever gets it – hence the stiff
competition.
