Machine Revenues Still in Decline
The slot
machines are the one thing that you can
count on in a casino to bring you in
money. Slot machines are the biggest
money makers that casinos have, and that
is why you see so many of them when you
walk in. They know that the majority of
gamblers will play a slot machine, even
if they are table games players. This
does not necessarily translate the other
way, as many slot machine players do not
play table games.
But as the economy worsens, there is the
fact that slot machines are not bringing
in the revenue that casinos can usually
count on. Instead, across the country
casinos are seeing a reduction in slot
machine revenue that is hurting them
significantly – and thus hurting the
states’ bottom lines.
Atlantic City is a perfect example of
this decline. The slot machine capital
of the Eastern Coast has seen their
numbers continue to decline for another
month, making this the worst possible
time to be in the slot machine industry.
According to the latest numbers from New
Jersey, the slot machines and table
games in AC have declined 18.7%, which
is even worse than the 15.1% decrease
that was reported in September.
Every year slot machine revenue has
increased substantially since they were
legalized in 1978. However, each month
throughout 2008 the amount taken in from
the slot machines over the previous
years’ months has been less and less.
According to the state, they are looking
at about $600 million less spent in the
state and that they had laid off roughly
3,300 employees as well.
