Ocean
Pines Wants Slot Machine Money
The Ocean
Pines Association, or OPA, is concerned
about the influx of slot machines on
their community. They say that the
amount of money that has been allocated
to them is not nearly enough to cover
the problems that the slot machines are
going to bring to their community. The
OPA sent a letter to state officials
asking them to reconsider the allocation
that they are currently scheduled to get
as they say that it is not reflective of
the “true impact” that the slot machines
will have on their community.
The state maintains that no one really
knows what kind of impact the slot
machines are going to have on them or on
any of the communities that will be
located near slot machines. However,
Worcester County can say that they will
be impacted by the slot machines as they
are going to be in the immediate
vicinity of the machines. They have
15,000 residents of the community and it
is the largest in the county.
They already know that traffic will
increase on a road that is already
considered to be congested. They say
that they have four exits all onto the
same road. They say that they can also
expect more emergency calls for police
and fire because of the additional
people and vehicles.
The County Commissioners have asked that
all slot machine revenue be sent to the
county instead of being split between
county and the municipalities. Ocean
Pines has not asked for a percentage of
revenue, they are simply trying to get
what they are going to need to survive.
