Poarch Creeks’ New Casino

The Poarch Creek tribe has opened a new casino in Alabama, and it is running more than 1,600 slot machines. Sorry, they aren’t slot machines, they are gambling machines – because if they were slot machines they would be illegal and we can’t have that in Alabama. However, when you look at the names of these so called non slot machines, they sound awfully familiar.

Walking down the rows of gambling machines, there are names like Wheel of Fortune, Double Diamond, and even Triple Lucky 7’s. Ironically these are the same names as those found in the casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. How is it that these non slot machines have the same name as those that readily admit that they are, in fact, slot machines?

You see, slot machines are illegal in Alabama, so those that have these machines don’t call them that. They call them pretty much everything else, including “electronic bingo games” but they want to be very clear that they are not slot machines. The tribe is not the only one keeping up the ruse however. There are casinos all over the state that are not referring to them as such, and let’s face it – the state likes the money that is coming in from them so why would they blow the lid on the whole thing?

Those that are in support of the slot machines in the state say that it was just a matter of time, and that if they had just gone ahead in the first place with legalizing them they wouldn’t be having these problems. Those that are against the slot machines say that this is a perfect example of giving an inch and them taking a yard. They say that the bingo machines should not have been legalized and then they wouldn’t be having this problem.
