Second
Attempt at Slot Machines
Governor
Steve Beshear is consistently in the
news these days because of his attempts
to get various online gambling sites’
domain names under Kentucky control.
Beshear is attempting to limit the
amount of outside slot machine gambling
that has been going on, so that he can
keep the much needed revenue in the
state. He has been very clear that he
doesn’t really care what the online
gambling community thinks about him, he
just wants to take care of his residents
and his state.
Last year he tried to get a bill passed
that would allow them to bring in slot
machine casinos to twelve different
locations, including several tracks. The
bill went into committee where they
decided to rewrite it. They rewrote the
bill and made it nine locations and then
sent it on to another committee. By the
time all was said and done, the bill had
visited all their committees and yet
still was not approved.
The bill died before it had a chance to
get voted on by a full House. Now, House
Speaker Greg Stumbo is trying to get his
own version of the slot machine bill
passed. He is coming at it from a
different way though. He wants lottery
terminals just like slot machines to
come to the tracks, and he is trying to
do it during the short meeting of the
assembly next month.
He has already submitted his slot
machine proposal and hopes that when the
House reconvenes on February 3rd that
they will have a chance to review it
before their session ends. He says that
if he doesn’t have at least sixty votes
he won’t call for a vote, but he is
hoping that he will.
