York
County Good Site for Slot Machines
Scarborough Downs fought valiantly to
bring slot machines to heir raceway, but
in the end they were unsuccessful. They
say that it had a lot to do with the
Christian Right and that they were
worried about the dangers of slot
machine addiction and so they voted them
down. However, they argued that the
additional money would have been good
for the county as well as for them – but
no one was buying it.
Instead, now they are on to greener
pastures. They are now looking at York
County as a possible future site for
putting in a harness racing track, and
yes, slot machines. It has only been a
little more than two months since they
were turned down for the last group of
slot machines.
However, undeterred, they are seeking
out York County instead. Scarborough
Downs’ representatives met this week
with the 12 Town Group to discuss their
plans for the track and the slot
machines. The group is an unofficial
gathering of representatives from the
various town in inland York County, and
they wanted to meet with them to discuss
how they might feel about the slot
machine facility.
Scarborough Downs’ attorney said that
since the slot machine defeat in
November they are not looking back, only
forward. However, the spot they have
chosen may be less than ideal, with many
of them at the meeting saying that they
did not know if they would be able to
sell something like this to their
residents.
