Atlantic City
Still Seeing a Revenue Drop
It has been very difficult for
Atlantic City, New Jersey as of late.
They have worked very hard to try and
keep their revenues up, but there it has
been very hard to do so. This is a
state, and a city, that has seen slot
machines and table games for several
decades. They were the first on this
side of the country to offer them and
for a long time they were the only ones
to offer them. It was extremely
lucrative for them to offer their
gambling and players came from
neighboring states on a regular basis to
play.
However, it started going downhill when
surrounding states started adding in
their own slot machines. Slowly as state
by state added in their own slot
machines at parlors and racetracks
across their own states, fewer residents
wanted to make the trip over to Atlantic
City to play there. The state started
seeing a drop in their numbers, but it
wasn’t until Pennsylvania added in slot
machines that it got really bad. The
majority of their out of state clients
come from PA and New York, so with their
addition of slot machines they lost a
large number of their clients and with
it their revenue.
Then the economy hit and between the
slot machine competition and that they
saw their numbers continue to slide
downward in an unhealthy pattern. But
they still had their table games – that
is until PA voted to allow table games
in their state as well. Now NJ knows
that they are looking at reduced
revenues for the remainder of their time
so they have to find ways to bring in
more. Their revenues for this past year
were down another 13% which literally
equates to millions of dollars less that
they have to play with.
