Casinos Still Feeling the Economy
Across the board the economy has hurt
the gaming industry. There are very few
casinos that didn’t report some sort of
loss last year from their slot machines,
which is simply because people do not
have the money to play at them that they
used to have. They say that they have to
cut their expenses to make up for the
loss that they have seen from their slot
machines and some places are saying that
it has been very difficult indeed.
But
two casinos that you would have almost
expected to continue doing well are not. Connecticut’s slot machines have not been
performing nearly as well as they would
have hoped by now, and they are starting
to get really concerned. The
Mashantucket Pequot Tribe runs the
Foxwoods Resort Casino and MGM Grand at
Foxwoods and they said that their slot
machine revenues for the month of
December were down $44.6 million. Last
year same time they were showing $44.9
million which was already down for their
casino.
The
Mohegan Sun was much larger. This slot
machine casino is run by the Mohegan
Tribe and they reported that they took
in $57.1 million this past December.
Same time last year they took in $63.1
million –which again was down from the
previous year.
But
this does not just hurt the casinos –
the loss in slot machine revenue hurts
the state as well. Instead of being able
to pay them the normal amount, they
could only give them 25% of what their
slot machines were now making. This slot
machine revenue is money that they bank
on and now they are finding that it is
not nearly as much as last year, nor the
year before.
