Fort Erie
Race Track and Slots Making Changes
The
Fort Erie Race Track and Slots horse
racing and gaming facility is trying to
keep their doors open. The track has
been around for more than a century, but
they are having a tough time keeping
their doors open because of the economy.
They don’t want to lay people off, but
they just couldn’t figure out how to
keep their doors open.
So the
Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp stepped
in and said that they were going to help
then find a solution for their problem.
They are going to reduce the number of
slot machines that the track offers down
to 400 from 1,079. The Lottery said that
this will make more sense as they just
don’t have the demand for the slot
machines and they are paying on them
every month.
They
said that they were “responding to the
market conditions” and what they saw as
unnecessary expense. With fewer slot
machines, the track will not need as
many people to work there however. This
means that there are bound to be lay
offs anyway, but they are till hoping
that they might find a way to keep more
jobs than they need to get rid of. The
track said that through “attrition” or
shorter work weeks that they might be
able to keep on more than they will have
to get rid of.
Both
the lottery commission and the track
feel that getting rid of the extraneous
slot machines is a step in the right
direction and that this is one sure way
of getting them back on their feet
again.
