Fraternal
Groups Want Slot Machines
Many
people don’t know that places like the
Veterans of Foreign Wars or the American
Legion Posts raise money for other
charities. They spend their years doing
fund raisers and things that will help
them bring in money and then they give
the majority of that money away.
Sometimes it is needy families,
sometimes it is children in hospitals –
and sometimes it is simply getting toys
for Christmas. They are worthy
fundraisers.
But in
this economy it has gotten much tougher
for them to raise money so they are
constantly looking for ways of doing
that. Many of them do a kind of gambling
night with all of the proceeds going to
charity, but as more states have allowed
slot machines to come in it has made it
less popular among residents to go to
the smaller locations to play. So they
would like to do something about that –
they would like their own slot machines.
It
would seem that if the VFW and the AL
are offering their proceeds from their
slot machines to these charities – that
is a lot more worthwhile than paying to
keep a casino open. Not that they won’t
still get the majority of the money that
comes into the state slot machines, but
at least the charities will have a
fighting chance.
Without the slot machines they don’t
stand much of a chance at all as all of
their gambling proceeds are going to the
numerous casinos around instead. It
would not take much for places like this
to be able to offer the same thing that
the for profits are offering only on a
smaller scale.
