NYRA Seems to
be in Trouble Again
The
New York Racing Association was given
another chance to get themselves
together – and still it looks as though
they can’t. The NYRA says that they are
running out of money again, which is
only causing worry among government
officials in the state. The governor had
given them a chance to redeem themselves
when they came to them asking to be able
to continue running the franchise. But
that was six months ago and now they are
saying that they are in trouble again.
They
say that there is a good chance that
they might have to cancel the Belmont racing season as well as the final
part of the Triple Crown. They also said
that the Saratoga meet over summer might have to be
cancelled too. The NYRA has not been
turning over their financial records,
but finally did due to a subpoena from
Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.
The
NYRA says that the slot machines that
have been promised them for several
years now have to come to fruition or
they will not be able to continue the
way things are. They say that they need
the slot machine revenue to continue as
the bills are just too much and they
can’t handle it on their own.
But
the franchise for the slot machines
themselves has not been awarded yet –
which means that they are going to have
to wait a while longer. Some want to
know what good the slot machines are
going to do them, since they obviously
can’t keep themselves solvent. They
think that adding slot machine revenue
to the mix is only going to confuse the
matter.
