Thefts are Up at the Casinos

Note to all of you who said that casinos don’t bring in more crime – tell that to the people who have gotten robbed at or in the casinos. Police say that they are reporting higher numbers of thefts at many slot machine locations, with some having more of a problem with it than others.

At the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, state police have reported 43 thefts from patrons at the slot machine casino. In Bensalem, Philadelphia Park listed 75 thefts. Harrah’s Chester Casino and Racetrack has had 57 and they have only been open since January.

Presque Isle Dows in Erie had 28 reported thefts, they opened about a month after Harrah’s. However, Presque Isle Downs and Mohegan Sun do not see the traffic that the other two do which is why they don’t have as many thefts.

The state police say that it comes down to the fact that people are not paying attention to their purses or their wallets because they are so focused on the slot machines. However, the thieves are more than paying attention, so as soon as you aren’t they take what they want.

The casinos have security systems in place, where they can usually catch the thief before they leave the premises. However, they say that once they leave not only is it much harder to find them because they only have a photo to go by, but it is also in the hands of the Plains Township police after that.

They say that if you find money on the casino floor that is not yours, chances are someone dropped it after playing the slot machines, or on their way to them. They ask that you please turn it in. They say that if you do not, you may face charges of theft of property lost, mislaid or delivered by mistake.
