Churches Oppose Table Games
The
Kanawha County churches are opposed to
the addition of table games at the
racetrack, and are rallying the troops
to get them to spread the word that
table games are bad for the state and
even worse for their county. They held
an outdoor rally on Sunday in Dunbar to
discuss the evils of gambling.
Right outside the First United Methodist
Church, the Reverend Okey Harless led
the group encouraging them to oppose the
table games in Kanawha County when they
come to vote on August 11th. Harless
said that gambling is a menace to
society and it was his job, and the
church’s job, to stand up in defiance of
the measure.
Harless runs the parish, and is a member
of the Dunbar Ministerial Association,
and he joined other members of churches
to promote their anti-gambling stance.
They are campaigning against the
addition of table games to the existing
slot machines at the Tri-State Racetrack
& Gaming in Nitro.
The group, and others in support of the
group, have several demonstrations and
rallies planned to campaign against the
expansion of gambling. They will be
running them up until the vote, which is
August 11th. Harless said that they must
stand up to those who want to expand the
gambling, because it will only end up
with more people in debt from gambling,
which leads to the destruction of the
home and the family.
Harless said that those that have been
arguing that the number of jobs that the
county will be getting is nothing
compared to the number of addicts they
will be getting. He said that the
industry has a high turnover rate
anyway, so how much benefit is there
really?
