Focusing on the Slot Machines
When
people outside of Nevada think of
gambling and slot machines, they think
of Las Vegas, and sometimes they think
of Reno. Reno used to be one of the
biggest places for gambling, and for
decades they were. However, at some
point the town could not keep up with
Vegas, and things started to decline.
Now, Reno is a shadow of what it used to
be, with some trying different tactics.
The city council of Reno is trying to
shift focus away from the slot machines
and more onto the other things that Reno
offers. They say that they have some of
the most beautiful mountains in the
world with the Sierra Nevada Mountains
surrounding them. They also point out
that they have other things going for
them in the places that still offer slot
machines.
They have spas and restaurants, as well
as big names in entertainment to try and
lure people in. Those casinos that chose
to focus on slot machines and not expand
are now closed and shuttered, with
graffiti on their fronts – waiting to be
turned into condos. Until then, they add
to the seediness that Reno has become
associated with. Many skip over the city
in favor of the Strip in Vegas instead,
but Reno is trying to bring them back.
Not only are the casinos that stayed
with their slot machines gone, but
instead they have a new whitewater and
kayak park which people have found truly
enjoyable. They also have an aviation
museum which aviation fans have found
truly entertaining. They say that they
have no state income tax because of the
casinos, which makes it a great place to
live as well.
They still have lots of tourism from
them so they know that they cannot ever
get rid of their slot machines, and why
would they want to? But they know that
they have to do something because they
just cannot compete with Vegas.
