Machines for Hair?
People
play the slot machines for a lot of
reasons, but not usually to make
themselves look good. However, two
people thought that people might
actually put money in a slot machine to
do exactly that, and they were right.
Neil Mackay and Richard Starrett are the
founders of Beautiful Vending, and it is
based out of East Kilbride.
They say that they did their research
and discovered that the one thing that
women could not put in their purses for
a night on the town was hair
straightener. So they put it in a slot
machine and women put their money in to
get 90 seconds to use a hair
straightening iron.
The company has 900 of their hair
straightening slot machines in Britain
and another 500 around the world. The
two put mostly their own money into the
machines, but they have gotten funding
from the Royal Bank of Scotland and the
Small Firms Loan Guarantee Scheme as
well. They are expected to make £2
million next year.
The company has protected their
intellectual property and filed for
patents early on, so that when other
companies have tried to operate similar
slot machines they won verdicts against
them. They say they have gotten a lot of
help from the Glasgow Chamber of
Commerce. They took an SE course that
has helped them immensely.
Experts say that they are one of the few
companies that might actually make money
off of slot machines because not only do
they have business savvy, but they are
best friends as well.
