Hoosier Park Adding Slot Machines
With the
passage of House Bill 1835, Hoosier Park
jumped at the chance to add slot
machines to their lineup. However, in
order to do so they needed to add more
land. Even before the bill had passed,
the track was trying to figure out how
they could add slot machines, and they
realized that they needed to expand the
whole complex, not just add them to what
they already had.
On Friday, the Indiana Horse Racing
Commission gave them permission to do
just that. Their parent company, Centaur
Inc. had asked to buy 19 acres by the
track to expand their slot machines. The
commission approved the request, and now
they just have to decide which
construction plan to go with.
Since the government had given them
permission to bring in up to 2,000 slot
machines to the track, they also told
them that they had to spend at least
$100 million in doing so, as they needed
to ensure the success of the addition of
the slot machines. Centaur is spending
$1 million for the land, and is buying
it from Virgil Cook – who has been a
partner in Hoosier Park since the
beginning.
The closing is expected no later than
July 31st, and at that time Centaur will
pay Cook $50,000 in “earnest money” and
will begin the investigation period.
Depending on what they find, they have
45 days to cancel the sale if they so
desire.
They are planning on adding a place for
the slot machines, as well as more
stables. They are not sure which plan
they are going with just yet, but they
promise that the public will be
pleasantly surprised.
