Many
Residents Don’t Want Slot Machines
With the
various groups in Maryland hoping to get
their way in the slot machine debate,
both have forgotten to ask how the
voters feel about the machines. They
know that they will be voting for it and
are doing everything in their power to
sway their vote – but many don’t really
listen to their concerns.
A large majority of residents want to
know how it will affect them. They know
that the state is always looking for
ways of making more money – and they
think that this will simply be one more
way of doing so. They want to see their
government looking for ways of spending
less, not covering the ways they are
spending more.
They are worried about the social impact
that the slot machines will have on
their state. They know that the entire
community can suffer when crime and
addiction come in – as they quite often
do when gambling is underfoot. It adds
to an already shaky economy as more
people find themselves putting their
mortgage payments in the slot machines
instead of the bank.
As alcohol usually accompanies slot
machines, you now have gambling and
alcohol together which never mixes well.
This then leads to the breakdown of the
family unit and eventually the
community. They are afraid that bringing
in slot machines might cure the
government’s problems with spending
temporarily – but eventually it is a
debt they will all have to pay.
