Rocky
Gap
When
people get a sniff of the kind of money
that can be made from bringing in slot
machines, they are determined to get a
piece of it themselves. Rocky Gap is no
different than any other location.
Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort has long
been a place for young families to
congregate, and in fact, that was their
marketing pitch. They tried to bring in
that kind of clientele, showing them
that they were a great vacation
destination.
But the pull of Ocean City was a little
too strong, and many of those families
kept migrating there instead of into the
beautiful area that they tried so hard
to promote. The state has put more than
$20 million into the location to try and
hold onto what little families they
have.
Now, however, they are hoping to keep a
hold onto that kind of clientele, while
bringing in another. They are adding
slot machines next door, which are bound
to bring in millions, as well as a whole
other group of people. If the referendum
is approved in November, they would
bring in 1,500 slot machines.
Many who do go there are horrified at
the plan. They say that a state park is
not a place for slot machines and
gambling. They say that the two don’t go
together and they shouldn’t. Everyone
from state officials to the Sierra Club
have weighed in on the matter, but now
it is up to the voters.
