Camptown
Counting Blessings
Camptown Greyhound
Park could not be happier today as they
have just gotten approval to keep their
license another 60 days. The Kansas
racetrack owners had appealed to the
Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission to
give them an extension before they
revoke their license and they have done
so.
The commission was planning on taking
their license, Wichita Greyhound Park’s
license, as well as The Woodlands’. They
now have 60 days to get their plans in
order to show them how they plan on
opening their tracks again and what
dates they are going to have races.
The owners of the tracks have not been
running races as they say that they
cannot compete with those tracks that
have slot machines, and are able to keep
a larger portion of the proceeds. They
were hoping that by not running the
races the legislature could see their
way to giving them the approval for less
revenue slot machines. They want it
adjusted from 40% to 22%.
They say that with the amount of revenue
that the state is poised to take from
the slot machines they cannot keep the
machines at the tracks. They say that
the upkeep from them as well as trying
to pay out larger purses would ruin
them. They were hoping for a longer
extension to see where the legislature
would stand on the slot machine revenue
issue, but now they don’t think they
will get that opportunity as it won’t be
long enough to get them to when the
legislature will convene again.
