Downs Making Changes
Churchill Downs has
been trying to get slot machines at
their track in Kentucky for quite some
time. They say that without the slot
machines they will not be able to
compete with those tracks that are
allowed to have them. They argue that
those that have slot machines are able
to offer larger purses and other
incentives that they cannot because they
don’t have the additional revenue.
The Churchill Downs Racetrack is home to
the Kentucky Derby and without the slot
machines they say that they might as
well be any other track. But now they
have decided to start fighting another
way to get what they want. They have
brought in Kevin Flanery to be president
of the track and are hoping for big
changes.
Flanery will report to Bill Carstanjen –
the CEO of the company. Flanery has been
with the company since 2005 when he was
brought in as VP of National
Public Affairs. He then was promoted to
SVP of National Public Affairs and
Communications in March of last year.
Flanery already has experience with slot
machines in that he headed up a campaign
last year that was successful in
bringing slot machines to their Miami
race track, and they are hoping that he
has similar luck with this one. They
know that they are fighting an uphill
battle, but they know at some point they
are going to be able to show them how
valuable the slot machines really are
and will get them legalized. Otherwise
they say that there really isn’t much
hope long term for the track.
