Slot Machine
Debate Continues
As the war
between those for and against slot
machines in Ohio rages on, there has
been a change in some viewpoints as to
how well they could serve the state. Now
it seems that Governor Ted Strickland
has jumped ship and is for the slot
machines as well. For months he has said
that slot machines would never see the
light of day in his state, but now he
has changed his mind.
He has come up with a proposal that
would bring up to 12,000 slot machines
into the state and says that they would
bring in around $455 million just for
their licensing fees. This does not
include the $933 he says would come in
from slot machine revenue.
However, many residents feel betrayed by
the switch in sides, and many say that
they had felt that they could count on
their governor to stand by them and keep
slot machines from being legalized. They
say that they have been adamant in their
voting against the expansion in gambling
and he was voted into his job because he
believed the same way they did.
There are those that have questions
regarding the numbers that he has come
up with. They say that they want to hear
how he came up with these numbers, and
some experts believe that they may be
overinflated to try and turn more
residents to the side of slot machines.
The plan would go through legislation
not as an amendment to the state’s
constitution – and therefore the
residents would not vote on the matter.
