Will it Ever
End?
It seems like the slot
machine standoff in Ohio will never come
to an end. The infighting in the state
is definitely taking its toll on both
residents and government officials, and
one expert wonders if it is worth it.
The people of Ohio have repeatedly voted
down slot machines because they say that
they are a tax on the uneducated and the
poor, which in many cases they certainly
seem to be. However, this has not
stopped their government officials from
trying to find a way to pass a slot
machine bill in a way that goes around
the voting process.
But now they have another problem, their
government officials are not getting
along with each other, and Republican
Senate President Bill Harris seems to be
at the heart of it. The Democrats say
that Harris will not pass their budget
and is “holding it hostage” while the
Republicans say that they are simply not
ready to move on it as they don’t
understand the slot machine elements of
it.
The Democrats say that the budget was
balanced, but the Republicans say that
they don’t fully understand the
implications or the steps involved in
bringing in slot machines yet. The
Senate has now said that they will hold
public hearings to determine how they
came to their numbers when referencing
the slot machine revenue.
However, the people of the state, while
against slot machines are even more
against the Republicans holding up the
budget. They say that slot machines or
not, they are playing politics with the
budget which is causing harm to them.
Meals on Wheels had to suspend taking
new clients, and they are just one
program affected.
