Keeping an Eye Out
With residents keeping
a close eye on the slot machine
shenanigans that have been going on in
their legislature in Ohio, there is
another group that is also watching to
see what becomes of the games. The Ohio
High School Athletic Association is
wondering how the slot machines are
going to affect them as well.
Now, you might be wondering why a HS
Athletic Association cares at all about
slot machines, but it isn’t so much the
slot machines that concerns them –
rather the location of those machines.
They say that each year they hold their
state cross country meet in the fall at
Scioto Downs. But if slot machines are
coming to the track this could impact
them dramatically.
This year’s meet is scheduled for
November 7th and they don’t foresee any
changes in that right now, but they say
next year is a whole other situation.
The track is one of seven that would be
getting slot machines under the plan,
according to their governor and
legislators. The state does not have a
specific time frame yet for when they
would be bringing in the slot machines
so they say that they don’t really have
to worry about it for this year, but
next year will surely be different.
The school is circulating a petition
that says that once the slot machines
come in, if they could refrain from
taking bets the day of the meet until 5
pm this would allow them to have the
track for their annual meet and keep the
gamblers and the students from
intermingling. They say that they could
make the other tracks act accordingly
and this way they would not be penalized
for offering the track to the students.
