State Really
Considering Impact of Slot Machines
The state of
Massachusetts is really looking into
slot machines and the effect that they
would have on the state’s residents. The
state has been considering adding in
slot machines to help with a budget
shortfall that they are experiencing,
but popular opinion is very divided over
the issue. Governor John Lynch had said
that he would not make any moves
regarding the slot machines without
carefully considering all of the angles.
He has created a Gaming Study Commission
that will look at the pros and cons of
bringing in the slot machines and
expanding gambling. He has named Andrew
Lietz to chair the slot machine panel
and they have already planned their
first meeting for some time after August
15th. They are then planning to have a
work outline and schedule by the first
of October and an interim report not
long after Thanksgiving.
Lietz should do well with the slot
machine board considering he has sat on
several boards before. He has worked on
everything from taxes to the state
university system, and feels qualified
to run the board on slot machine
expansion.
He says that while most people are very
strong in their convictions with regards
to the slot machines, he says he truly
does not have a “position one way or the
other” and claims to be “agnostic” in
his believes about expanded gambling. He
says that the governor expects a full
and complete report from them, one that
includes the viewpoints from people
around the state and he is going to get
him that. They are planning on filling
out the rest of the board with people
who are members of the public, as well
as other legislators, law enforcement
personnel, etc. so that they get a true
sampling of ideas and viewpoints on the
slot machines.
