Park Trying to
Keep License
The Wichita
Greyhound Park has been closed for
almost two years, but that doesn’t mean
that they want to give up their license.
The track says that they still have hope
that they will be able to open again for
business one day, and that if they lose
their license they know that they won’t
ever open again.
The Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission
had said that they were ready to pull
the track’s license, but have given them
a stay until July 21st – but then the
license will go back to the state. Phil
Ruffin, owner of the track, says that
this is good news and it gives him more
time to figure out what to do.
Ruffin is supposed to come up with a
plan to save the track – and it involves
slot machines. Ruffin says that if he
can get slot machines back on the
ballot, they will be approved at his
track and they will be back up and
running. He says that the main reason
they had to close before was because
they didn’t have the money to stay open
because they were not allowed slot
machines.
With other tracks able to bring in slot
machines and use that revenue to
increase purses and bring in better
horses, they just can’t compete with
that kind of revenue. He argues that if
he was allowed to truly compete by
bringing in slot machines and boosting
his own revenue that he would be able to
bring in those big ticket horses with
larger purses as well.
